Enjoying life with a complete set of teeth is the goal after tooth loss. Whether it’s traditional or implant dentures you choose, one of the primary questions you might have for your dentist is, “How long will it take to receive my new smile?” Since it is a process that cannot be rushed, keep reading to discover what kind of timeline is normal for tooth replacement.

Step #1: Your Scheduled Consultation

You will meet with your dentist to discuss your concerns, goals, and what kind of denture you hope to receive. Your dentist will evaluate your oral and overall health, as well as the density of your jawbone, to determine whether a traditional or implant denture is best for your needs.

Step #2: Preliminary Treatments

You may need additional care before receiving your new teeth. Bone grafting to create a denser jawbone or even gum disease therapy may be required. If these are necessary, it will add several months to your overall timeline.

Step #3: Impressions Taken

Once your mouth is fully healed from extraction, bone grafting, or gum disease treatment, your dentist will take impressions of your mouth, as well as measurements. This will make it easier for lab technicians to craft a set of teeth that fit correctly once they are in place.

Step #4: Creation

If you are receiving traditional dentures, there will be a few back-and-forth visits to your dentist’s office, as you will need to be fitted with your new prosthetic to make sure it feels good and delivers an improved bite.

If you are receiving same-day dentures, you will have them put into place after your initial procedure; however, it’s important to remember these are not the finalized version of your teeth. You will wear these until the permanent ones are ready for placement.

If you decide to go with implant dentures, you will first have your dental implants put into place (between 4 and 6 posts along the top or bottom row). You will then return after several months of healing to receive your finalized restoration.

Step #5: Placement of New Teeth

Your dentist will give your dentures a thorough examination to ensure they look right before having you wear and bite down with your new teeth to guarantee a perfect fit.

Although the process can take weeks or months before you receive your final set of teeth, you can trust that the technicians and your dentist will make sure you are happy with the results.
