What Are Dental Implants?

Dental implants themselves are small posts, often made from titanium, that are surgically placed into the jawbone below the gumline. Since they’re composed of biocompatible materials, they can fuse with the bone, providing strong support for restorations. No other tooth replacement option can replace the roots of lost teeth the same way that dental implants can, making them a superior choice that offers numerous other life-changing benefits.

The 4-Step Dental Implant Process

Dental implants are one of the most comprehensive treatment options for replacing missing teeth, and it’s easy to see why. With their multi-step process, they can offer the stability and longevity that comes closest to mimicking natural pearly whites. During your initial visit, our team will walk you through the entire treatment plan so that you know what to expect from beginning to end. Until then, here’s what to know about the dental implant process.

Initial Dental Implant Consultation

You’ll need to meet with our team first for a consultation. We’ll determine if dental implants can be used to assist you, as well as if any preliminary procedures such as a bone graft or periodontal treatment are necessary. These procedures can generally help ensure that your results can last as long as possible while minimizing any risks of implant failure in the long run. Once we’ve confirmed that your mouth and jawbone are sufficiently healthy to undergo the procedure, we can move forward with your surgery.

Dental Implant Surgery

Our team at Kringle Dentistry can complete the entire implant process in-house, saving you the hassle of having to coordinate with multiple teams. The surgery itself is straightforward; we’ll place however many implants are needed, usually anywhere from one to eight, into the jawbone. Before starting, our team will first numb your mouth completely with a local anesthetic so that you’re pain-free. We can also administer sedation dentistry to create a more comfortable and relaxing experience. After we’ve made a tiny incision in the gums and placed your metal posts appropriately, we’ll suture your tissues closed and place a dental cap to protect the implant before having your family member or friend take you home for recovery.

Dental Implant Osseointegration & Abutment

Once they’ve been placed, the implants will need three to six months to fuse with your jawbone. This process is known as osseointegration and is crucial to creating the stable foundation needed to support your restoration(s) for a lifetime. If things don’t heal correctly, the future restoration won’t be able to function as intended. After your mouth has healed, our team can deliver your abutments, which house your replacement teeth.

Delivery of Dental Implant Restoration(s)

We can provide you with a beautiful, lifelike, and fully functional dental restoration once your implants have fused with your jaw and your mouth’s healed up. After we’ve placed your custom dental crown, bridge, or denture on your metal post(s), we’ll verify that your bite is correct and that you’re happy with your results before sending you on your way to enjoy your smile.

Who Dental Implants Can Help

If you're struggling with tooth loss, whether it’s one, several, or an entire arch, dental implants could be the solution for you! Unlike other restorative options, implants provide a more permanent fix that mimics natural teeth in both form and function. This makes them great for patients who want a reliable and long-lasting way to improve their oral health, confidence, and overall quality of life. Who Is a Good Candidate for Dental Implants?

Most adults with missing teeth can get dental implants, but there are a few factors that can affect your candidacy. Typically, you’ll want to have healthy gums, good jawbone density, and a commitment to maintaining your oral health. If you smoke, have uncontrolled diabetes, or suffer from other conditions that affect healing, you may need additional treatments to prepare for implants. But don’t worry, we can help you succeed!

During your consultation, Dr. Kyle or Dr. Kasey will assess your oral health, discuss your medical history, and help you discover if dental implants are the right choice for you.

Missing One Tooth

If you’re missing just one tooth, a dental implant can restore your smile with minimal adjustments. Unlike a traditional dental bridge, which requires shaping adjacent teeth for support, a single implant stands on its own. This preserves the health and structure of your grin.

The implant is topped with a custom-made crown that blends seamlessly with your smile, giving you a natural appearance and returning most of your biting force. However, the best benefit of a dental implant is its ability to preserve your jawbone. This prevents your appearance from changing over time and helps avoid additional tooth loss.

Missing Multiple Teeth

For patients missing multiple teeth, dental implants offer a more durable and long-lasting alternative to partial dentures or bridges. Depending on the number of missing teeth and their location, implants can support a bridge or even multiple crowns, securely anchoring them in your jawbone.

Doing this provides excellent stability, allowing you to eat, speak, and smile with confidence! Implant-supported bridges also help support the natural shape of your face, prevent bone loss, and reduce the strain on your remaining natural teeth. Combined, these benefits offer better aesthetics and improved long-term oral health.

Missing All Teeth

Even if you’ve lost all your teeth, dental implants can provide a life-changing solution with implant-supported dentures! Unlike traditional prosthetics of their kind, which can slip or cause discomfort, implant-supported options are securely anchored into your jawbone, offering unmatched stability and comfort.

This solution not only allows you to enjoy all your favorite foods without worry but also helps you avoid facial collapse. This is the sunken appearance that often accompanies extensive tooth loss and aging. With proper care, implant-supported dentures can last for decades, making them an excellent investment in your smile and overall quality of life!

Dental Implant FAQs

Are dental implants removable?

Some patients have questions about dental implants, such as whether or not they’re meant to be regularly removed and reinserted, like dentures are. However, these teeth are known for being more resilient and longer-lasting because they’re the only replacement teeth that are surgically embedded in your jaw and then fuse with the bone material to become a more permanent part of your mouth.

As a result, they are not intended to be removed, except by a qualified professional, like one of our providers in Grenada.

How long do dental implants last?

Getting dental implants can involve an investment of time and resources, and it’s only natural to wonder if this treatment lasts long enough to be worth it. Fortunately, these restorations can last 25+ years if cared for properly, and for some people, they remain in good condition for the rest of their natural lives!

You can help maintain your new teeth by:

  • Implementing a routine. Brushing and flossing twice daily removes harmful plaque and bacteria that contribute to oral issues, such as peri-implantitis, the leading cause of failure.
  • Choosing foods carefully. Although this treatment restores up to 80% of your original bite force, chewing anything too hard, crunchy, or sticky might damage the ceramic material.
  • Scheduling routine visits. Seeing us every six months for a routine checkup and cleaning allows us to monitor your dental health and address any areas of concern, like swollen gums around your implant, before they worsen.

Are dental implants considered safe?

Are you wondering whether getting one of these prosthetics is considered safe? This process involves oral surgery, and it’s only natural to have questions. But the truth is that this treatment is usually considered safe when it’s performed by a trained professional. However, those with certain medical conditions, such as diabetes, cancer, or those who take certain medications, might not be considered ideal candidates.

At our practice, Dr. Kyle has completed advanced training to place and restore dental implants safely in the office for your convenience.

Does getting dental implants hurt?

You’re not alone if you’re wondering whether surgically placing dental implants is a painful procedure. But rest assured, our compassionate team will do everything we can to help you feel calm and comfortable throughout your appointment.

For instance, before starting your procedure, we’ll numb the surgical site with a local anesthetic to prevent pain. We also offer nitrous oxide (laughing gas) that’s inhaled through a mask placed over your nose while we work, or oral conscious sedation in pill form, to help you remain relaxed and prevent the nerves in your mouth from responding to external stimuli.
